Your Phone Privacy

It is not surprising with today’s extreme technology that some common sense and courtesy has been lost. Many people do not realize how sacred phone privacy can be, but there are ways to protect you privacy. Here are some easy ways to protect your phone privacy.

For many people, privacy is something that is coveted, and in this extremely technological day and age, phone privacy can be seen as a thing of the past. However, that doesn’t need to be the case - there are ways that you can safe guard yourself and provide some phone privacy. Let’s look at a few ways that you can increase the privacy of your information and your phone.

Cell phones are a great way to help protect your privacy with your phone. Land lines (home phones) are easily traced back to the address at which you reside, and anyone can find that information on the Internet or through a reverse directory phone book. To protect yourself, use your cell phone to eliminate the traceability of your phone number to your residence.

Of course, nothing beats good old fashioned common sense. You shouldn’t give your phone number out to just anyone - either your home phone number or your cell phone number. You should ’screen’ the people that have your phone number and only give it to people that you trust and know well. You should feel comfortable with the people that you give your phone numbers to and you should be able to trust them that they will not hand it out or give it to anyone else without your permission. Of course, while this seems like it should be common courtesy, it doesn’t hurt to mention when giving your phone number to someone that you do not want them to give it to anyone else without your permission.

You can also block your phone number from appearing on Caller ID on the receiving phone. You can do this easily - just dial *67 before you dial the phone number of whomever you are calling. This will block your name and phone number from being displayed on a Caller ID and you will appear as a “blocked call” or “private number”, or something to that effect. This works for both cell phones and land lines.

You can also talk to your telephone company about blocking your ID on your phone so that your phone number and name never appears on Caller ID to the places you are calling. You may also wish to choose to have your phone number unlisted to increase your phone privacy.

You should be careful about how you use your phone number on the Internet as well - many website require that you include your phone number to sign up for their program, service or to get an account. Consider what information you are giving them and if it is required. Always be sure to read the terms of service and the privacy policy before giving any information to an online company - this too will help you maintain your phone privacy.
